August – heather and host

July went out with a heat wave and August came in with the eagerly awaited heather bloom to follow.  Our “glorious grouse” have encountered different and varying difficulties from predation (increasing), to a reduction in nutrition where heather beetle has taken a hold and particularly dry conditions early on in some places too.  Upland keepers […]

Midsummer – the joys and the challenges

Well, we have had the longest day and are in for a scorcher of a week – welcome news for wildlife and consequential insect life where water is abundant and the showers over the past week or two have certainly helped. On location for Game Fairs, Clay Shoots and Calendar pictures

Date posted: May 5, 2014

We have been travelling around taking photographs for the new calendar this week and what a pleasure it has been.  Meeting fantastic people in quite stunning locations – from bluebell woods to high fells.  We are immensely grateful to the estate owners, headkeepers who have allowed to visit the estates and to the gamekeeping girls who have without exception been helpful, patient and a credit to the profession.  It’s not easy finding a job these days and its even harder for girls but hopefully becoming more accessible.

We have one Game Fair under our belt now and have Matt and Dean to thank as well as Walter and Julie.  We are also grateful to BASC for the stand and appreciate their support.  A week on and we were at the very smart JCB headquarters with the NGO.  Members queue up for the privilege to view the premises and hear the speakers and of course an excellent lunch!  Again it is a great help to be able to attend these events and meet many keepers and colleagues without whom this job would be impossible.  Thank you all.

Then we have been travelling to or in spirit of events put on for the benefit of GWT.  It makes me very humble witnessing the huge amount of hard work which goes into each and every event – most recently the Borders College Clay Shoot and Auction at Braidwood and next week in conjunction with RABI on 10th May in Lincolnshire thank you to Steve Smith for his hard work in organising.  Please see events for details and if you are able or in the area do come along and help make this day a success.
