August – heather and host

July went out with a heat wave and August came in with the eagerly awaited heather bloom to follow.  Our “glorious grouse” have encountered different and varying difficulties from predation (increasing), to a reduction in nutrition where heather beetle has taken a hold and particularly dry conditions early on in some places too.  Upland keepers […]

Midsummer – the joys and the challenges

Well, we have had the longest day and are in for a scorcher of a week – welcome news for wildlife and consequential insect life where water is abundant and the showers over the past week or two have certainly helped. It is still uncertain for some shooting estates, stalking estates and fishing interests however […]

April 21 – Happy 90th Birthday to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

Date posted: April 21, 2016

It is truly remarkable that most of us cannot remember another monarch whilst we have lived and most of all are in awe at Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s immense energy and stamina which outstrips most of us at the best of times.  Duty, honour and trust are words which spring to mind and I hope that in some small way the Gamekeepers’ Welfare Trust can aspire to emulate those important principles for life.

April has been a busy month both in terms of calls to the helpline and requests for support but also visiting Colleges and the first Game Fair of the season.

Newton Rigg continue to provide a template of excellence and it was a real pleasure to meet students and explain the role of the Gamekeepers’ Welfare Trust and how this relates to their fledging career and journey into gamekeeping.  That Malcolm Riding was celebrating a significant birthday on that day was a bonus.

The first Game Fair for GWT was held at the Gamekepeers Fair, Catton Park on the weekend of 17th/18th April in sunshine and hail showers on occasion.  We have many people to thank not least our very own Darren and Matt who are always on hand to answer queries, sell raffle tickets and provide support throughout.  Sarah, Sam, Richard, Alex too deserve sincere thanks providing the stand, and on hand to supply teas and coffees throughout the weekend.  All this would not have been possible without the organisation and generosity of Steve Bloomfield Show Director.

We all have people we look up to and admire throughout our working lives and one of these was definitely Don Ford.

Don Ford, one of the founding members of GWT and whose loss in 2015 we have felt keenly, was rightly given tribute through the Don Ford Memorial Trophy during the weekend.  His son Colin attended specially to present the trophy to the winner of the Gamekeeper’s Clay Shoot on Sunday afternoon.

Steve Bloomfield also organised donated Zeiss binoculars for a raffle throughout the weekend.  These were won by Arthur Ellwood of Gamekeep, another stalwart supporter.

Thank you all and not least to Daniel (pic insert) and Isaac who sold raffle tickets and tea all Saturday at Catton !CgKQaO5WcAA8pJd Daniel at BASC Catton

Personal Message to everyone in the Gamekeeping Community

To all gamekeepers, stalkers, ghillies, past present and future and their families These are uncertain times for everyone but we are fortunate at least to live where we do, with our shoots and estates where we can continue our work with little effects in restrictions around the home at least. We are encouraged to see […]

11th December 2019

ON election day and approaching a time of giving perhaps it is time to take stock and consider how fortunate we are, even in these testing times.  The resilience of gamekeepers in the face of multiple challenges is amazing, just getting about this autumn has been difficult enough.  To hear and see the sheer ignorance […]

Hatfield House – The Game Fair 2019

We are setting off to the Game Fair in almost record heat but in typical “can do” attitude for everyone attending. Those of us who live and work in the countryside are used to working with nature, the weather and plan accordingly. There is a huge amount of work involved in just a few days […]

2018 Review

2018 began with sadness and tragedy, and we remember those we have lost within the Gamekeeping Community. We have risen to the challenge, coming together in “Raising the Game” to address mental health problems and make a difference. As part of this initiative we began “Stag Training”, which continues around the country in 2019, with […]

Christmas Message

Christmas night is a time of reflection after a hectic day of family celebrations or perhaps a solitary day or perhaps a working day – there are certainly always jobs to do whether feeding round, seeing to the dogs or indoors with a lunch to prepare. For the Gamekeepers’ Welfare Trust it is a time […]
